** Athens Pride 2005 !!!, June 25th
The femme groups will soon be listed in our femme section "Gynaika"
Most of the lesbian and friendly groups listed under Greek LGBT Community are located in Athens.
About half of the Sapphites members too. Contact the Sapphites group
Scheduled happenings and meetings are listed in the Sapphites Calendar
(if the anouncement is sent to us in good time..)
you may meet Greek Sapphites & their friends, in Athens...
in the following mostly-non-gay places
We have to remind you the places refered below are "straight", unless otherwise specified. Even if the customers are 90% male-only or/and female-only groups. Even if you have met all the customers at the LOA women-only parties. Even if all your x's are there every Friday night. ---You're in Greece now, you're supposed to be whatever you claim to be... well, mostly..
Cafe-bars, bar-restaurants, Restaurants, Bars, Clubs, visitor information

Scape, cafe-bar (was Rages) friendly, mostly gay men - Kostantinoypoleos 82, near Iera Odos, next to the "Play" (gay) club, and next to the railway towards the north.. thus the name (Rages meaning rail-tracks. Tip: if you feel the earth move under your feet, it's not an earthquake, it's just the late train passing by.. )
The bar used to be the entry & foyer of a currently unused small theater. Opens evenings. Mostly gay men.

cafe-bars

*- the Network-Against-Racism cafee, Tsamadoy pedestrian street, Exarcheia area
A hung out place for students and minorities. Pro-human rights, against discrimination. Very friendly to everyone, very low prices. Open all evenings ~20:00pm - 1:00am
Run voluntarily by the antirastist network groups, the LOA attends to the bar every second Thursday. (ie. Thursday, June 30th 2005, .. ) when it becomes "our bar".. and another LGBT group attends it on the other Thursday.. so it's definitely terribly lasbian & lgbt friendly on all Thursdays (since summer 2004). On other days it's just a good place to have an inexpensive drink and usually quiet.. unless you "fall" on some happening. Reporting June 2005 - the LOA group is trying to organise happenings on their Thursdays, like lesbian film-screenings, open discussions of lesbian interest etc.. and another lbgt group attends the bar on every other Thursday.. so this is the LGBT day of the week there (more women on the LOA weeks..)           :-)

*- Womyn cafe "Kafeneio Gynaikon" in Maroysi market area, on Dimitras pedestrian street, 1st. floor above a shop - very close to the metro station.
We can't figure out its oppening hours, it may be market-hours. Definitely closed on Sundays.
There's rumors it's very chic. Must be open during (some of the) market hours-we found it closed on a Sunday evening.

BI coffee-bar, very friendly -at Psyri area, on the Psyri place
mixed croud - quite "in" in spring/summer 2004 (should be open evenings/early nighs)

Group Therapy, bar, Gay, & Straight-friendly
Lepeniotoy 11, Psyri area, tel. 210.3234977
Mixed crowd, boyz and gilrz, all ages. Opens in the afternoon, but people treat it as a bar/club, and it fills up after ten or eleven. Happenings about once a month (no stable dates)..
The favourite place of some groups.. - Early it feels kind of like you're sitting in a shop-window.. but it's different later. Tip: if it looks empty, come back about an hour later..

bar-restaurants

*- Myrovolos a very friendly & very relaxed restaurant-bar in Metaxourgio, frequented daily by most of the local lesbian & gay community
Giatrakoy square, Giatrakoy str.
mostly women-only or men-only companies (guess why..)
Interesting interior, the best greek female voices and ballads playing
Literaly cool at the tables out on the square, even in the hottest summer..
The place to chat leisurely around lg people, to see half of the local community and be seen by them..
Note: the food prices are rather targeting the prosperous queer community. It is excelent quizine, but the more budget-minded can - and do - just have a drink or two. Expect to be face-checked by everyone on your first entrance, and check them back in your best shining smile.

* - Kirki, cafe-restaurant Apostoloy Pavlou 31, Thesion area, with a good view to the Acropolis,
especially early evenings, maybe too early on Sundays...
Mostly sitting out, weather permiting, boys and girls come and go
Great tastes at dear prices
summer 2005 - declared "it's not gay-friendly any more". No recent information on its existence

*- Arroyo, restaurant-bar, Ikarieon 8, Gazi area, tel. 210.3479190
they claim les-friendly.. In the hot summer, take a look at their top-terace with your friends. (if you're in good physical condition! you got to climb 2 high flors sttairs, then a few more steps).. for a really cool night. Watch your affectional demonstrations, and go for botled drinks.

restaurants

Kanella (cinamon) tavern-restaurant
Eumolpidon & Kostantinoypoleos str, Gazi area, (oposite Noiz) - simple, new (Spring 2005),
we've heard the best about the interesting "greeklish" cuizine..

Aristera-Dexia (Left & Right)
.. Gazi area - high gourmet restaurant (on taste and prices)
(not many sapphites frequent it, but they would if they could afford it.. a very friendly place, where you may also have a drink at the bar.. )
Great cellar and great recipies.. we know where to go when we win the lottery.

Almaz - a bit more than queer friendly..
Triptolemou 12, Gazi area, pcode 11854, URL: www.almaz.gr
cafe bar restaurant - live greek music on sunday afternoons

*.. there's also rumors, - unidentified information (Matina strikes again !)
.. there must be at least a couple of restaurants owned by women
.. frequented by Sapphites and their friends. But we cannot talk openly about them, as the local lesbian community may not offer enough support for them to dare declare they're sapphic places.

bars

En Meri, early-opening coffee-bar at Kapnokoptirioy 5 pedestrian str. (from Stournari str.), Platia Vathis downtown area, tel. 210.8223105
a very female venue,
Opens daily 11am-12noon, Sat/Sunday 6-7pm. A new place (spring 2004) of female ownership, we've heard a lot of nice comments about this venue and it's "garden". (Please tell them the plants need some real watering!)

Kallidromio, Kallidromioy & Zossimadon str, Exarcheia area
a beautiful early 20th c. building. Not so much a hung-out place as a real friendly one to the lgbt community, hosts a variety of happenings, from literature nights by the fireplace, to lgbt group meetings and open screenings in the cool back yard (summer is the only time for the yard).
There may be some piano nights in winter.. we'll find out..
A nice quiet inexpensive place to relax and talk if there's no happenings, though not the best place to visit alone.

*- Gemini bar Atthidon str., Kallithea area - A small quiet friendly place for night owls,
Many a night persons favourite. A dedicated Greek folk music place
Here the night binds us all, makes us sisters and brothers.. But it's a loner's place, so take care. (mostly closeted women customers, but also a few men that may .. misinterpret things.. Should be quite interesting for social sciences research.. )
open nightly, till the early morning hours. Prices: 6 eu. per drink

*- Tazz, coffe-bar, Nileos 9, Thission, friendly..
(tip: avoid it if you're claustrophobic.. or take a look and check your "feeling" before you enter. A lot of girlz love it. I guess it depends on what you're looking for..)

* - So Bar So Food - "straight" nibble-bar, Persefonis str., Gazi area
Some sapphites love it, some dread it.. You'd better check it out for yourself
hint1: avoid the overcrowded Friday & Saturday nights, unless you love overcrowding.
hint2: on first entrance, when all the bar customers stare at you, smile at them and greet them like old friends, then let then wonder where you know them from :-)

clubs

*- Onar - late club - (ancient greek word for 'Dream') - at Elasidon 2 & Piraeos str., Gazi area, info 6938.820313,
As far as we know it's not listed anywhere.. but it sure is full of women - all ages, and the occasional lesbian handbag. Mostly Greek dancing music, including a lot of lolk music, and a strong sense of private female space. A place to check real late on Friday and Saturday nights (2pm could be fine.. ) and a study of the older times greek lesbian bars & modern greek "glendi".
Acceptable prices, watch your drink and your possessions, prefer drinks in a botle oppened in your presence.

Noiz, Eumolpidon 41 & Kostantinoupoleos (oposite Kanella restaurant), Gazi area
the newest and most "in" youth les place in Athens
entrance & 1st drink ticket ??eu.

*- Sodade a mixed club (mostly young men)
industrial post-modern place on Triptolemou st., Gazi area
(mostly) boys & (some) girls of almost all ages (20-40). Very interesting music mixes
prices: entry ticket.. - www.sodade.gr

history.. lesbian places that have been...

Troll, Lesbian bar-club * REPORTED CLOSED - 17 JUNE 2006

Visitor Information
(this is a new section under construction.. Started January 2006, please be patient.. )

Maybe you're visiting Athens for the first time and you need some more information, like
- maps

- metro, buses, ..
First thing.. ask for a free metro map on the first metro station you visit. Orient youself to the Athens basin: Acropolis and Philopapoy hill in the center, Lycabetus and the smaller hill of Strefis a bit to the North-east, and Toyrkobounia a bit further away to the north, are the only peaks inside. Framed by Ymetus long mountain to the east-southeast, Pendely to North-east, Parnetha mountain to North-west, and opening to Peraias harbour to the west-South west. Ask someone to show you the location of where you stay and try to visit some high place to mark the nearest peaks, to get a better feeling.
Downtown: get aquainted with Omonoia & Syntagma squares, triangle this walk to Monastiraki, then add Thesio and the extention towards Gazi area, that's a good basic orientation reference network. Add the Archaeological Museum, and maybe locate the Exarcheia square behind it if you think some venue there may interest you. The shortest walk to Exarcheia by metro is from Omonoia square, walking up Themistokleous street.

- maps:
ATHENS MAP - full municipality area, about 740Kb - http://www.athensguide.com/map/athens.htm
you'll need mostly the central part of it, for the city center

Broken links? - Please report broken links to the Webmistress sappho-AT-pathfinder.gr with the subject "Spages: broken links"

- interesting sights:
Everyone's gonna guide you to the Acropolis, we'd rather guide you to the Artemis temple at Vraurona (east Atiki).
Just beside the airport, you might have noticed it just before landing if you were told.. Still you got to make a long ride to get there, as it's on the wrong side of the airport, between the hills on the east shore. This is the first classical Sapphic place to visit in Attika. Beware, the energy of the godess has not faded through thousands of guests like other ancient places, actually it's kept quite alive and strong by the river Er ..
Read more about the place .. (links)
How to get there .. by bus or hire a car. You may also get a taxi from the airport, (if you're driving or by taxi.. best drive and nearest from the aiport is through Markopoylo).. we'll try and figure the distance by road ..
On the map.. following the east coast of atica, it lies between Loutsa (lately also named Artemis.. only to perplex you.. as Artemis is the second name of Vravrona.. ) and Port Rafti, just at the east of the new airport. (here is an older map of the area.. the missing airport lies in the empty area just above the blue road from Marlkopoulo..)
By bus.. you may get the city-bus to Loutsa - south end, mind you ("No'tia")! from Thesio, just next to the metro station .. then walk the rest of the distance. This is a good walking, no pavements, and there's more walking ahead.. (2 kilometers from the archaeological site to the museum.. ) Or ..

The other female-energy place to visit is Eleysis (Elefsina), the place of Demetra, her daughter, and her sacred mysteries. That's on the west of the city, at the Northenmost edge of the Saronikos gulf, just above Salamina island.
