το LGBT integroup θρηνεί για την επιλογή του κοινοβουλίου της Latvia για πρόεδρο της κοινοβουλευτικής επιτροπής
για τα Ανθρώπινα Δικαιώματα και τις Κοινωνικές Υποθέσεις

Η βουλή της Latvia επιβεβαίωσε την εκλογή του Janis Smits στη θέση του προέδρου της κοινοβουλευτικής
επιτροπής για τα Ανθρώπινα Δικαιώματα και τις Κοινωνικές Υποθέσεις, χωρίς να εκτιμήσει καθόλου την
προηγούμενη ιστορία του σε δηλώσεις μίσους και σε προ(σ)κλήσεις μίσους και βίας.
Το Intergroup του Ευρωπαϊκού Κοινοβουλίου για τα δικαιώματα λεσβιών & ομοφυλόφιλων θρηνεί την
εκλογή αυτή ως προσβολή προς όσους πιστεύουν σε μια Ευρωπαϊκή 'Ενωση με βάση τα ανθρώπινα
δικαιώματα, την αποδοχή τής διαφορετικότητας και την ισότητα.
"Είναι φανερό ότι σε μια τόσο σημαντική ανώτατη θέση στο νομοθετικό σώμα της Latvia για τη διαχείριση
θεμάτων ανθρώπινων δικαιωμάτων και κοινωνικών υποθέσεων, θα έπρεπε να βρίσκεται κάποιο άτομο που
προστατεύει και προωθεί τις αξίες της Οικουμενικής διακήρυξης των ανθρωπίνων δικαιωμάτων" δήλωσε
ο Raul Romeva, αντιπρόεδρος του Intergroup on Gay and Lesbian Rights.
Το Intergroup ζητά απο τη βουλή της Latvia να αναθεωρήσει την επιλογή της και να ακολουθήσει το
δυναμικό παράδειγμα του Ευρωπαϊκού Κοινοβουλίου όταν αρνήθηκε να αποδεχτεί την εκλογή του κ.
Μπουτιλιόνε για παρόμοιους λόγους.
Η σημερινή Ευρωπαϊκή Επιτροπή ανακατατάχθηκε αναγκαστικά μετά την αντίθεση του Κοινοβουλίου στην
υποψηφιότητα του κ. Μπουτιλιόνε για τη θέση του Επιτρόπου για τη δικαιωσύνη, την ελευθερία και την
ασφάλεια, εφόσον οι απόψεις του δεν συμφωνούσαν με τις Ευρωπαϊκές αξίες περί ισότητας, ανθρώπινων
δικαιωμάτων και το διαχωρισμό εκκλησίας και κράτους και ήταν προφανές ότι δεν μπορούσε να αναλάβει
την προώθηση των βασικών δικαιωμάτων. - συμφωνα με δηλώσεις της Sophie In't Veld, αντιπροέδρου του
Intergroup on Gay and Lesbian Rights και προέδρου της ομάδας εργασίας του Ευρωπαϊκού Κοινοβουλίου
για το διαχωρισμό μεταξύ θρησκείας και πολιτικής.
Σε κοινοβουλευτικές συζητήσεις ο κ. Janis Smits αναφέρεται συχνά σε αποσπάσματα της Παλιαάς Διαθήκης
υπερασπιζόμενος τις απάνθρωπες απόψεις του υπέρ της θεωρίας ότι οι σεξουαλικές μειονότητες πρέπει να
θανατωθούν. Ο κ. Janis Smits είναι δηλωμένος αντίπαλος των οικουμενικών ανθρώπινων δικαιωμάτων,
υπερασπιζόμενος ένα κόσμο όπου ομοφυλόφιλοι, λεσβίες, αμφισεξουαλικοι και υπεργυλικοί άνθρωποι δεν
θα έχουν κανένα δικαίωμα προστασίας και κανένα δικαίωμα να υπάρχουν ! Είναι καθήκον μας, ως
πολιτικοί να διασφαλίσουμε ότι δεν κάνουμε σοβαρά λάθη κρίσης, επιλέγοντας άτομα ακατάλληλα για να
αναλάβουν τόσο σημαντικά θέματα.

speak out against the LGBT community to chair the committee on human rights and social affairs.

Affairs Committee"
The Latvian Parliament has confirmed the nomination of Janis Smits for the post of chairperson of the
Parliamentary Human Rights and Social Affairs Committee, in blatant disregard of the candidate's prior
history of hate speech and incitements to hatred and violence. The European Parliament's Intergroup on
Gay and Lesbian Rights deplored the confirmation as an insult to those who believe in a European Union
founded upon the principles of human rights, diversity, and equality.
"Clearly, such an important position, one of the highest level posts in the Latvian legislature to handle issues
of human rights and social affairs, should be held by an individual who protects and promotes the values
enshrined by the Universal Declaration on Human Rights," said Raul Romeva, Vice-President of the
Intergroup on Gay and Lesbian Rights.
The Intergroup urged the Latvian Parliament to reconsider its choice, asking the Latvian Parliament to
follow the courageous acts of its European counterpart when it refused to accept the nomination of Mr.
Buttiglione for similar reasons. Indeed, the current European Commission had to be reshuffled following the
Parliament's opposition to the candidature of Mr. Buttiglione for the post of Commissioner for Justice,
Freedom, and Security. "Mr. Buttiglione's views were not in line with EU values on equality, human rights,
and the separation of church and state. He could clearl not be in charge of promoting fundamentalrights,"
said Sophie In't Veld, Vice-President of the Intergroup on Gay and Lesbian Rights and Chair of the
European Parliament's Working Group on the Separation between Religion and Politics.
In Parliamentary debates, Mr. Janis Smits frequently quotes the Old Testament in defence of his
old-fashioned values arguing in favour of a world-view that advocates sexual minorities should be put to
death. "Mr. Janis Smits has been a vocal opponent to universal human rights, advocating a world in which
gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgender peoples have no rights to protection, no rights to exist," said
Michael Cashman, President of the Intergroup on Gay and Lesbian Rights, "It is our common duty, as
politicians, to ensure that we do not make grave errors of judgement by selecting individuals who are ill
suited to take charge of such crucial dossiers."
